Organization: CESVI - Cooperazione e Sviluppo Onlus
Country: Myanmar
Closing date: 30 Dec 2016

Work Context

Main focus of CESVI’s interventions in Myanmar is Community Empowerment with integrated actions on Health, Livelihood and Governance. CESVI’s volume of activities and operational capacity in Myanmar have been increasing in the last years, now reaching around 500.000 beneficiaries with a team of more than 300 staff. CESVI is currently working in two States (Northern Shan and Kachin) and four Regions (Magway, Sagaing, Mandalay and Yangon) with a total of 19 Townships and more than 1.400 villages covered. CESVI is operating from a main Country Office in Yangon, Area Offices in Pyin Oo Lwin, Lashio, Bahmo and Meiktila and Field Offices in almost every Township.

CESVI is currently implementing a Livelihood Program in the Dry Zone of Myanmar funded by the USAID in partnership with PACT, UN-Habitat and MSI. The project started in October 2011, will last until March 2018 and it is a continuation of a Food Security programme Cesvi started in 2007 in Magway Township with funding from the EU. Activities focus mainly on agriculture and irrigation and in particular on formation of farmers extension groups for dissemination of appropriate improved technologies, educational program for farmers (Farmers field schools), set up of demonstration plots for soil and water conservation technologies, promotion of network of farmers specialized in seed production, support to small farmers for oil crop production, support for farmers for off season vegetable production.

At the end of 2016, Cesvi confirms its commitment in the Dry Zone until 2019, starting the implementation of a project funded by UNDP and focused on livelihood. The action aims to fight climate change risks on water resources and food security, through the promotion of climate-resilient farming methods. This will be achieved through the establishment of rural extension networks and multiplier training disseminations. The service is established thanks to local grassroots volunteers for agriculture development, acting as multipliers. Some of the topics of the intensive trainings they receive are: climate-resilient farming methods training, water saving agriculture training, farmer-managed seed multiplication, participatory demonstration plots establishment and farmer field school on dry land farming. Each training will be followed by practical activities to realize what has been learnt, thanks to the supply of innovative technologies and the provision of necessary inputs in order to serve as trial or demonstration.

Looking to the past,in Northern Shan, Cesvi has implemented a Livelihood Security programme funded by LIFT and focused on Agricultural production in support of small farmers, livestock revolving funds and off farm IGAs in support to landless, natural resource management and Nutrition promotion, which ended in 2015.

Finally, Cesvi is continuously looking for new opportunities in order to expand its presence in the country in this sector.
